Burning a Data CD or DVD

If your Windows PC is equipped with a CD/DVD burner you should have the access rights to write a CD or DVD.

  • Begin by placing a blank CD or DVD into the CD-R/RW drive with the label side up. Sometimes you need to look for small lettering around the center if they are generic discs. You may get a pop-up asking you what you want to do with the Blank CD. You should choose ("open writing CD folder" or choose the CD writing software (Nero, Sonic, CDBurner...)
  • If you don't get a pop-up you can Explore the CD drive from the Windows Explorer by double-click on your CD drive. A "Burn a Disc" window should pop up. Enter a Disc title. See the descriptions for each of "Like a USB flash drive" (THIS IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR GENERAL FILE USE) and "With a CD/DVD player" and choose the most appropriate option. (For help, see the link "Which one should I choose?") Then click "Next."
  • If "Like a USB flash drive" was chosen, it will then format the disc. It should allow you to open the drive in the window. You should now be able to drag files into the CD / DVD drive window.
  • When done, right-click the disc in Windows Explorer, then select "Eject."
  • If "Like a USB flash drive" was chosen, the system will close the disk so that it can be read in other computers, and the disc will eject. When the disc is re-inserted into a PC, the disc will appear as another drive that can be written to or copied from. If new files are written to the disc, when ejecting next it will close the disc again before ejecting.
  • If "With a CD/DVD player" was chosen, the disc will eject. When the disc is re-inserted into a PC, the disc will appear as another drive that can be written to or copied from. If new files are written to the disc, the choices of "Like a USB flash drive" (THIS IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR GENERAL FILE USE) and "With a CD/DVD player"will appear again.
  • If you use CD creation software there is usually a wizard to help you. Normally you will be creating a Data disk.
