VPN and RDC Access

Summary

Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows a user access the WSLH network from a remote location. Typically a user would make a VPN connection followed by a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to their desktop workstation.

Body

* The attached RDC document also provides information on setting up remote Audio and Video.

VPN access can be requested in the following ways:

  1. During a new account setup request.
    1. Add VPN under other access on the WSLH Computer System Authorization Request document.
    2. Complete the WSLH Remote Access Authorization Form. Both account holder and their supervisor will need to sign and date the form.
    3. Upload signed forms to the WSLH Service Desk ticket requesting the user account access.
  2. Opening a WSLH Service Desk ticket requesting adding VPN access to current user.
    1. Either the end user or their supervisor can request VPN access.
    2. Complete the WSLH Remote Access Authorization Form. Both account holder and their supervisor will need to sign and date the form.
    3. Upload signed form to the WSLH Service Desk ticket requesting the VPN user access.

Notes:

  • VPN access isn't given without a specific written request. So a request to modeling a new user after an existing user that happens to have VPN access won't get the new user VPN access.
  • The supervisor can request VPN access from set time frame. e.g. date A to date B.
  • OIS must have an end date by the supervisor when VPN access is requested for any anyone that isn't WSLH Academic staff or WSLH University staff. They can be limited to a workstation(s) that they can Remote Desktop into when approved by OIS management.
    • You don't need VPN access if one just needs to work from one workstation within our buildings and RDC to another workstation within our buildings. [Workstations that are kept on our network]
      • RDC access is granted to WSLH Academic staff and Full time University staff automatically when their account is created.
      • RDC access is not created automatically for others.
        • Supervisor written request, by completing the Computer Systems Authorization Request  is needed within WSLH Service Desk ticket.
      • Anyone not a WSLH Academic or University staff must have an end date set on their AD account to auto-disable.
  • OIS has the right to refuse VPN access and remove VPN access at any time.
  • Anyone using VPN access must have an up-to-date operating system and be actively running up-to-date anti-virus or anti-malware software on the connecting PC or device.

After approval has been granted and depending on what device and operating system you are using to install the VPN connection with, instruction for installing the connection can be found at the location below and the various operations systems that are supported.
